Clear Channel Canada Integrates Solar Powered Transit Shelters Into Edmonton Network
Clear Channel Canada (CCC) recently added 14 solar powered transit shelters to its Edmonton network, with another 26 to be integrated by the end of November.
The decision to transition to solar powered technology from the previous hydro source was made by the city of Edmonton and CCC to establish an eco-friendly transit shelter advertising network that aligns with the city’s environmental strategic plan.
The city has been working with shelter supplier Daytech Manufacturing Inc. to deliver a reliable and effective solar powered option for the past few years. Tests were completed in all weather conditions, including burying the panels under snow for two weeks in the middle of January, to ensure the technology was well-suited to the climate. The chosen technology performed very well in the harsh Edmonton winters and Clear Channel Canada will make snow removal a top priority.
Each shelter features a solar panel on the roof which provides 700 Lux – 600W to a battery stored within the display. A photo cell causes the advertising panel to light up once the natural light drops below a certain level. Daytech Manufacturing Inc. will be supplying 13-15 solar powered transit shelters and new Super Shelters a month, until installation is completed at the end of November.
