LinkNYC announced this week that as of the end of September, 576,321 people – more than the entire population of Atlanta, Miami, or Oakland, Ed, have signed up to use its super-fast, gigabit Wi-Fi service.
LinkNYC’s Wi-Fi has been used more than 26 million times since the first-of-its-kind network launched last February.
Jen Hensley, General Manager of LinkNYC told us “The fastest internet in New York City is on the streets, and it’s completely free,” said Jen Hensley, General Manager of LinkNYC. “With more than 400 Links installed across three boroughs, LinkNYC is already helping more than half a million people get online at super-fast speeds — and we are just getting started.”
Since removing tablet-based web browsing (see reasons here), use of LinkNYC kiosks has increased 12% as more New Yorkers take advantage of other tablet-based applications. Last week alone, New Yorkers made more than 21,000 free phone calls, used maps 11,000 times, and accessed 311 more than 4,000 times. Reports of users monopolizing the kiosks have dropped 82% since the service update.
LinkNYC is also helping to get out the vote by making registering to vote on Links easier than ever. Later this week, LinkNYC is launching a redesigned tablet homepage, which links directly to the New York State DMV’s Electronic Voter Registration Application page. Previously, voter registration was only available through LinkNYC’s 311 app.
The last day to register to vote in time for this November’s US election is October 14, 2016.
