Samsung and LG Go Head to Head w/ Their TV Operating Systems
Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are both set to enhance their own Smart TV OS in 2018.
Samsung Electronics’ Tizen 4.0, which was introduced in May 2017 and LG Electronics WebOS 4.0 will both get support for #IoT (whatever that means / entails) and voice recognition-based AI technologies.
Samsung Electronics’ Tizen 4.0 already allows a Smartphone to control other devices through Samsung Connect and it can also control other kitchen and home appliances such as the refrigerator and washing machine.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have both recently started to receive certifications from the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) which aims to ensure secure interoperability for consumers, businesses and industries by delivering a standard communications platform, a bridging specification, an open source implementation and a certification program allowing devices to communicate regardless of form factor, operating system, service provider, transport technology or ecosystem.
Expect then, to see Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics linking their OS to (so-called) AI speakers – Samsung not surprisingly will work with Harman and we understand are planning to release ‘AI speakers’ that work with Bixby during the first half of 2018.
Meanwhile LG Electronics has been working with Google, Amazon, and Naver.
