Weather on the Cell Phone
Gail Chiasson, North American Editor
The Weather Network, Toronto, has launched a free weather application for Windows Mobile- and Google Android- powered phones, following consumer demand.
There were already successful applications for the for iPhone and BlackBerry Smartphones, as well as the Network’s Mobile sites. Together, the iPhone and BlackBerry apps have 1.1 million unique users per month.
WeatherEye provides users with current weather conditions and forecasts for more than 10,000 cities worldwide in addition to Canadian and U.S. weather warnings.
The free apps are supported with a single ad unit strategically placed near the bottom, just above the navigation keys. The ad either clicks out to a mobile jump page developed by The Weather Network or a microsite built by the advertiser. Among the first advertisers to sign on are Ramada and Wendy’s.
Nielsen’s Q2 Mobile Internet Report notes that mobile.theweathernetwork.com and its French counterpart mobile.meteomedia.com are the third most popular mobile sites in Canada, with more than 887,700 Canadians accessing them monthly.
