Green Banner Advertising (Recycled Shipping Containers)

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

Recycled shipping containers and old plastic bottles are being used to create a one-off green large banner advertising solution, thanks to a partnership between Liverpool City Council and MediaCo, one of the UK’s leading environmentally sustainable Out of Home Advertising companies.

The advertising site, located in the St George’s Gateway area of Liverpool city centre, also uses renewable energy from a state-of-the art solar electricity system and low energy LED lighting contributing to the Council’s vision for a greener city.

Cllr Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, told us “We are committed to a net zero future for Liverpool. This means finding innovative and sustainable ways to improve how we deliver our services. This project is a great example of how we can find creative ways to greatly reduce our carbon emissions. The creation of this site using environmentally sustainable materials has resulted in an advertising resource which will provide value for the Liverpool taxpayer, through advertising income, whilst supporting our net zero ambitions. The United Nations recently named Liverpool as the world’s first Accelerator City, this recognises Liverpool’s commitment to rapidly decarbonise the live music, TV and film production sectors. This shows that our commitment to net zero is at the heart of everything we do. Our net zero strategy will have a hugely positive impact on how Liverpool City Council provides services, helping to create a sustainable future for all residents.”

Liverpool City Council has partnered with MediaCo Out of Home Limited to create the innovative, low carbon advertising site.

Joe Arshed, Managing Partner at MediaCo Out of Home Limited, said “We are so excited to see our brand of sustainable out of home advertising take part in the ultimate recycling; breathing fresh life into land that isn’t being used right now. Providing a place for great looking adverts to support the environment whilst making the use of a former landmark is a great way to support Liverpool and it is amazing to be launching with a JD Advert containing a local celebrity. We are delighted to be working with Liverpool City Council on this project, it is an example of what can be achieved with creative thinking and true collaboration.”

The structure has been created from repurposed shipping containers, while the advert banners themselves are created from material made from post-consumer waste – mainly plastic bottles.
