Haitian Relief Via Mobile

Gail Chiasson, North American Editor

We’ve seen millions of dollars being donated to Haitian relief from television shows, media companies, numerous other companies, organizations and individuals, but this one caught our eye: The Mobile Giving Foundation would like to thank MTV and the entertainment industry for their support in raising tens of millions of dollars during the ‘Hope For Haiti’ telethon.

The money raised will help a variety of charities including: UNICEF, Oxfam, Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Partners in Health, American Red Cross and Yele Foundation.

By Sunday night, overall donations made via mobile phones for Haiti Earthquake Relief passed $33 million across all the short codes, reported the Mobile Giving Foundation, a non‑profit organization and pioneer of mobile giving that is dedicated to helping other non-profits raise funds through the mobile channel.

By texting a keyword to a designated short code via a mobile phone, a micro-donation of $5 or $10 was – and can still – be made to aid the millions of people affected by this tragedy. The entire donation goes to the recipient charity, and the donation appears as a charge on the donor’s carrier bill.
