Ontario Recycling Fee Changes Effective April 1
Commencing April 1, 2010 Canadian provinces of Ontario and Saskatchewan are changing their Electronics Recycling fees structure. Ontario change in particular will affect Digital Signage and AV companies.
In Ontario there will be an overall fee increase on all sizes of monitors and new category introductions.
- Small size monitors and all in one devices (equal or under 29″) will now carry a fee of $12.25 (up from 12.03).
Monitors over 29″ such as Samsung 320MP-2 or NEC LCD3215 series and greater will carry a $26.25 fee.
Companies active in POS and Small Form Factor kiosk market may also be affected by the all-in one device fee increase. New recycling fee for AOI devices 29″ and under will be $12.25.
Desktop Computers (common category for PC-based media players) will see a fee reduction to $7.80 per unit. Desktop Computers category fee reduction is implemented to off-set the increase in the Portable Computers category sales which is made up of rapidly growing laptops, netbooks and tablet PC’s products. The increased fee for Portables category is now $2.75.
The change is part of commencement of Phase 2 of a 2-year plan to implement the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Program Plan under the Waste Diversion Act.
The WEEE plan requires brand owners, first importers, franchisors, and assemblers to pay fees for electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) supplied to Ontario. Collected fees will be used by OES to operate the WEEE program.
