International Sign Winners
Gail Chiasson, North American Editor
Three outstanding examples of modern sign design took the top spots in the International Sign Association’s 2010 Sign Design Competition in Alexandria, Virginia.
The winners were in each category…
- Restaurant/Bar category – Kreg Lyles, from Young Electric Sign Co. (YESCO), in Denver, Colorado, created the main entrance sign for the Twisted Olive restaurant. The sign featured reverse pan channel letters with border neon on a radiused canopy structure. Neon also lit the signature olive logo.
- Entertainment Venue category – Sign Works Co., Ltd., in Bangkok, Thailand, won for its design of the Hard Rock Café Phuket sign. Stretching over 46’ tall, this 10,000-pound sign was the largest ever constructed by the company. Three engineers spent more than a month designing the structure, which was then fabricated and transported 1,000 miles to the installation site.
- Retail/Specialty category – Sign Designs’ creation of Grow Marketing’s sign in Joplin, Missouri, won for its combination of heavy and industrial sign materials with a clean and modern lettering. This double-sided blade sign was created on a custom corrugated metal background with a three dimensional tree and leaves. The tree was reverse halo lit and the leaves constructed of exposed neon green.
