Mississauga, Ontario-based Women’s College Hospital, the first and only academic ambulatory care hospital in Ontario with a focus on women’s health, is implementing self-service kiosks from NCR Corporation for Wayfinding and patient registration to help minimize wait times, enhance efficiency and devote more staff time to patient care.

The hospital is introducing the NCR MediKiosk, a fully bilingual touchscreen self-service solution that makes it faster and easier for patients to check in when they arrive for appointments. With one swipe of their health card, driver’s license or credit card, patients can confirm their arrival, update contact information, fill out any relevant questionnaires for their appointment and see future scheduled appointments.

The NCR Wayfinding kiosks are being located in the hospital’s main front lobby and in Burton Hall to help patients easily navigate through the hospital with the touch of a screen. Patients can look up their location of their appointment and also print a step-by-step map to their destination.

Results of the 2010 annual consumer survey conducted by BuzzBack Market Research, New York, for NCR revealed that 70% of Canadians are more willing to choose a healthcare provider that allows them to manage various elements of the healthcare experience, such as appointment scheduling and registration using self-service channels – whether via the Internet, on a mobile device or at a kiosk.

“To support our new direction in ambulatory care, WCH is focused on enhancing the patient experience and is introducing a number of initiatives to minimize the time it takes to check-in for a pre-arranged appointment,” says Catherine Ladhani, project manager of electronic systems adoption integration at WCH. “We turned to trusted partners like NCR, the world leader in self-service solutions, because of the innovation solutions they have offered other health centres around the world.”

“Some hospitals in Canada check in up to a thousand patients a day or more,” says Stephen MacNeil, director, NCR Healthcare, Canada. “In the U.S., NCR patient self-service solutions have been proven to streamline check-in and other routine processes, cutting wait times and improving the accuracy of patient data while freeing up staff to focus on patient care.”
