The Green Bus is a home-to-school transport service currently in the West Midlands (expanding to Reading in September 2010) and serving some 2,000 pupils. The Green Bus we are told “presents an innovative style of dedicated home-to-school transport which focuses uniquely on customer service” and it looks very much to us like that mantra is an incredibly good fit – the bus fleet is already fitted with GPS technology and free on-board Wi-Fi and members of The Green Bus community can already track their buses online.

The Green Bus Strategy Director, Steve Jukes told us “In times of extreme weather and uncertain traffic patterns, there is nothing more important than parents having peace of mind when their child is travelling to and from school,” and to that end Infogain, a global retail and mobile solutions provider, has been selected by The Green Bus to develop a unique iPhone App to give parents secure, real-time tracking service for kids travelling on its school buses.

The introduction of a real-time iPhone App with a Google Map interface will enable every parent to download a secure, fully integrated tracking service in real-time to visualise the bus location (and while they are on the move). The App will also provide quick links direct to The Green Bus dedicated support team.

It’s scheduled to go live for the beginning of the school year in September 2010, with a ‘soft’ launch before the summer holidays. In its first phase The Green Bus App will offer all existing and new bus pass subscribers a fully comprehensive bus route visualisation on Google Maps in real-time.

This will be integrated with data on every school location, term activity schedules, holiday/half-day closure times, a dedicated news service, route change notifications and help for every parent headache – lost property tracking!!!
