An App For Using iPad As A Phone

San Francisco-based Toktumi Inc.’s Line2 app has been approved by Apple as what is believed to be the only calling app available for the iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G that can completely replicate the iPhone’s calling functionality, allowing people to set up a powerful alternative to regular cell phone service – for a fraction of the cost.
The service costs USD 14.95/month for unlimited US/Canada calling, and low international rates, and can be tried free for 30 days before signing up. Combined with the iPad’s 3G service that allows the owner to choose the amount of data per month he/she wants to buy, for as low as $14.99/month with no set contact, iPad owners can now make and receive crystal clear calls over 3G at an affordable price.
Peter Sisson, founder and CEO of Toktumi, said, “I like to use Line2 on my iPad as a speakerphone, especially for conference calls with multiple people in the room. I just set my iPad down on the table in front of me and it’s like I have a high-grade conference phone. The iPad’s powerful built-in speakers and microphone make the iPad combined with Line2 a great tool for group meetings.”
Line2 is considered good for the professional on the go – and the right solution for when the user is out and about with no access to a Wi-Fi network and needs to make a call over the iPad. Line2 also offers features like call waiting, conferencing for up to 20 people, call transfer, and advanced business features.
The Line2 account can be synched with the iPad so it detects the best available network (Wi-Fi or 3G) based on customer preferences and places and then receives calls over that network automatically. If the iPad is not connected to 3G or Wi-Fi, calls are automatically forwarded to up to six other phones so that customers can still receive them.
Line2’s VoIP capabilities via Wi-Fi allow international travelers to place and receive calls while overseas without incurring voice or data roaming charges. Using Line2, calls to any number back home in the U.S. or Canada will be free, as will calls to other Line2 users, wherever they are worldwide. Calls to international numbers start at $0.02 per minute, whether calling from home or abroad.
