Well, we haven’t seen this report yet, but we learned through the World Advertising Research Centre that a ComScore report showed Android phones’ market share jumping 42% in the U.S., moving from 12% to 17% between April and July, 2010.
Both Research in Motion and Apple lost ground over the same period, with RIM’s market share falling from 41.1% to 39.3% and Apple’s from 25.1% to 23.8% respectively.
However, despite losing share to Google Android, most smartphone platforms continue to gain subscribers as the smartphone market overall continues to grow. comScore found that 234 million Americans aged 13 or older used mobile phones during the three months to July. 2010. Of this total, 53.4 million owned smartphones, an 11% increase from the previous year.
The number of U.S. mobile subscribers who downloaded apps grew from 29.8% to 31.4% over the three-month period. And, by July, 21.8% browsed social media platforms or blogs, up from 19.9%.
Traditional mobile phone tasks had modest increases, with 66% of users sending SMS messages in July, compared to 64.6% in April.
