May 19th, 2014

Russ Curry, Ministry of New Media

The research body Route this month added retail spaces to those already included in its groundbreaking system. It has measured the outdoor sites at malls, supermarkets, pedestrian shopping areas, and motorway services across the country. Its GPS travel survey that forms the basis for audience estimates, now includes a sample of 34,000.

logo routeGroup M media agencies, MEC and M4C are the first pure play media agencies to sign up to Route and will be able to access Route’s data to plan their outdoor media campaigns.

The first retail data available covers 6,000 sites, at supermarkets and motorway services. The largest 1,323 supermarkets across all parts of the country, as well as many major motorway service areas, are included.

LHR T5 Becomes ‘Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5’

May 18th, 2014

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

In conjunction with JCDecaux Airport, Samsung is to rebrand London Heathrow Terminal 5 as ‘Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5’ (it’s the first time that London Heathrow has permitted a brand takeover of Terminal 5).

Samsung Terminal 5 branding

The two-week campaign kicks off Monday 19 May, and will see Samsung take over the signage, wayfinding, website and every single digital screen at the terminal in order to promote the launch of its Galaxy S5 mobile.

All 172 digital panels in the main terminal, gate rooms and baggage reclaim areas will feature the rebrand ‘Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5’ and images of the Galaxy S5 phone – total domination of all digital advertising in the building is completed by entrance and drop-off locations, in the lounges, at security, at the gates etc.

Russell Taylor, Vice President, Corporate Marketing, at Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland, said “We are always looking for ways to maximise brand impact and this activity is testament to that. The partnership with Heathrow Airport and JCDecaux Airport was a one-off opportunity to push the boundaries like no other brand has been allowed to do before.”

Fiona FitzGibbon, Head of Out of Home at Cheil UK, commented “The Galaxy S5 is the biggest mobile phone launch of the year and we wanted to go truly above and beyond when it came to building awareness. We have created an extraordinary partnership with London Heathrow. As a result, what we’ve created here for Samsung is something no brand has ever managed before. For two weeks every passenger travelling through the world’s busiest international terminal will see the Galaxy S5 everywhere they look.”

Signage in the airport lounges will drive passengers to the Dixons’ Travel stores where they can try out the phone for themselves.

Recent Digital Signage #Fails

May 17th, 2014

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

This last week in London saw quite a few Digital Signage #Fails – all of which we have pinned here.

Whilst all were noteworthy for different reasons we thought this ‘Key Lock On’ message on the centre screen (which hovers over all the content of course) was the most subtle.

Key Lock On, Ray Ban Concession London

It can be found at the Ray Ban concession in Sunglasses Hut, Covent Garden, London.

Please feel free to follow our Digital Signage #Fail Pinterest board or better still, add pins of your own! If you want to be invited to contribute then drop us a line. All are welcome.

Ronin and @DelphiDisplay To Merge?

May 16th, 2014

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

Our takeaway from the Wireless Ronin Technologies’ (RNIN) Q1 2014 Results Earnings Call Transcript is that they are in negotiations at this very moment to merge with Delphi Display Systems.

Liquidity and Capital Resources / Going Concern we quote “At March 31, 2014, we had cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash of $725K and working capital of $389K … At March 31, 2014, we had no outstanding balance and no borrowing capability on our line of credit with Silicon Valley Bank”.

It continued “In this regard, on May 5, 2014, we entered into a non-binding letter of intent with a private company in our industry and have begun our due-diligence examination of that company. The private company has similarly begun its own due-diligence examination of our Company”.

We’ve said before that Delphi don’t choose their partners particularly well, see ‘Oops @DelphiDisplay Marries Corpse Bride‘ and it’s our guess that the LOI referenced in the earnings call is to do with them.

Scala Summit Its Usual Success

May 15th, 2014

Gail Chiasson, North American Editor

Yesterday’s Scala conference at the Timber Lodge in London’s Olympic Park was, as usual, full of really interesting speakers.

Of all, we were most interested by Steen Mertz, of Denmark’s Jyske Bank, whose communications budget goes almost entirely to jyskebank.tv. Although it has been around for several years, it was completely unknown to us – NOT news to me, see ‘The Retail Bank at the Centre of the Community‘ written on a trip to Copenhagen back in August 2007, Ed – and to much of the audience.

We’ll be telling you more about it and the comments of other speakers in the coming days. For today, in a very busy London Digital Signage Week, we are off to the NEC Showcase and DailyDOOH’s Thought Leadership Summit on Employee Communications.
