If Big Data is the Answer – What is the Question?

August 20th, 2013

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

On 23rd October in NYC, Ayuda Media Systems CEO and co-founder Andreas Souptonuts, will speak at The DailyDOOH Investor Conference on the subject of BIG DATA.

Andreas Soupliotis speaking at the #NECshowcase

Andreas Soupliotis speaking at the #NECshowcase

By Gartner Group’s definition; ‘high volume, high velocity, and/or high variety information assets that require new forms of processing to enable enhanced decision making, insight discovery and process optimization’ he will rhetorically ask the question “If Big Data is the Answer – What is the Question?” and add “how will this affect OOH, DOOH and digital signage?”

Andreas told us this week “I will explain how I believe media owners can use Big Data to find correlation, not causation, I will talk about big data viewer metrics, non-linear optimization algorithms that try to maximize panel efficiency, how to combine inventory data with viewer profiles collected by cameras, how to analyse play log data from large player networks and record/capture live webcam feeds for analysis and POP purpose”.

It’s going to be a busy week for Andreas as he is also keynoting ‘Billboards Unplugged‘ – the Thought Leadership Summit sponsored by BARCO, taking place on Monday 21st October during #dpbmedia week.

Russ Curry, Ministry of New Media

The 22nd October DPAA Summit Video Everywhere sure has lined up an impressive list of speakers and thankfully they don’t seem to be the ‘usual’ sort of suspects.

logo DPAA_Summit video everywhereAt first glance it looks like new DPAA President Barry Frey is not afraid to shake things up a bit – I tend to agree, it’s nice to see an agenda that is not simply a list of DPAA members as speakers but let’s hope they do not have too many panels, Ed, and is really out to make a great impression with his first summit.

Land Rover’s Interactive DOOH Campaign With Sound At UK Airports

August 20th, 2013

Gail Chiasson, North American Editor

Land Rover is promoting the launch of the all-new Range Rover Sport with a special build digital outdoor campaign featuring an accelerator pedal, responsive interactive content and directional sound.

landrover1The campaign was devised by RKCR/Y&R. The campaign will see existing Digital Eyelite screens adapted to include a Range Rover Sport accelerator pedal and the call to action to ‘Push the pedal hear the engine’. The campaign aims to deliver the speed and thrill of the SUV’s powerful 5.0 litre Supercharged Engine to business travelers at Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted Airports over the next four weeks.

The unique out-of-home activation was planned and booked by Mindshare and project managed by Fuel, Kinetic’s creative and innovation hub.

Each Digital Eyelite unit is not only fitted with the accelerator pedal and elements of the interior of the all-new Range Rover Sport, but is adapted to include directional sound so only the person interacting with the installation can experience the full impact of the revving engine. When the pedal is pressed the on-screen content is also activated to visualize the acceleration of the most responsive Land Rover to date.

Rebecca Bainbridge, head of Kinetic Fuel says, “Our installation will be the first interactive out-of-home campaign that combines both digital and sound to be delivered in the UK airport environment. Users can create their own unique experience by pressing the pedal to release the powerful sound of the all-new Range Rover Sport.”

“This is a fun, interactive idea that really demonstrates the cars performance credentials,”
says Rupert Williams, managing director at RKCR/Y&R . “And that exhaust note is something special.”

Roll Up @WirelessRonin’s Booth 4 Sale

August 19th, 2013

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

We know times are tough at Wireless Ronin but are they that bad that they have to try and raise USD 25,000 by selling off their not-so-old exhibition booth?

large-tradesho-booth---image-1We note up on Used Booths – a completely free classified ads web space for (you guessed it) ‘used booths’ item #2239 which states…

Category: Island
Size: 20′ x 30′, Larger
Location: Los Vegas, NV

This beautiful booth can be reconfigured to fit your tradeshow needs. Whether using the booth as a large 40×50 or a modest 20×30, you don’t lose any of the “wow” factor most desired when exhibiting at a show.

The booth was built in 2008, has only been used (4) times, purchased for $150,000 and is in good condition.

As Ronin have said that they will take booth space at #dse2014 we wonder what they will do for a booth, and if it will be any cheaper than the USD 25,000 that this sale would realise.

Way2ride, VeriFone Taxi App Does Just About Everything

August 19th, 2013

Gail Chiasson, North American Editor

We wondered what had been keeping our friend Jason Gross, vice-president of strategy and marketing at VeriFone Media, so busy lately, and now we know.

Jason Gross

Jason Gross

VeriFone Systems has launched Way2ride, an app that allows you to check into a taxi to pay for your trip by simply tapping the screen at any time during the ride, eliminating the need for cash, a card swipe or even your wallet. And when the ride is over, you can just get out.

But it’s much more than that. This app lets you set your preferred tip and how you want your receipt delivered – printed, emailed, or just stored in the app and online so you can submit your expenses with the click of a button.

“This represents a new step in the evolution of digital out-of- home media,”
says Gross. “Once you’ve checked into the cab, VeriFone’s TaxiTV platform knows who you are. And depending on what you’ve done interactively with the taxi screen in the past – eg. read the business news from CNBC – it may target more business-related ads to you that you might be interested in.” (VeriFone promises that they adhere to a strict privacy policy on not sharing personally identifiable information).

new_verifone_articleOh, yes, and if you see an ad on the TaxiTV screen for, say, Iron Man 3, tapping an on-screen banner could pop up nearby show times and ticket options on your phone, with your credit card info already loaded for an easy purchase, even if you are getting out at the theatre at the next corner.

“Basically, we are now talking directly to the consumer,” says Gross. “We know once you’ve gotten into a cab (you’ve pressed “I’m in a taxi” to check in for payment) and we take it from there. The backend of all this is pretty complicated, but it’s easy for the consumer. This is groundbreaking in terms of adding value to the user experience.”

This system has initially launched in all VeriFone cabs in New York City (over 7,000 of the city’s 13,000 yellow taxis), but VeriFone is working with the other payments providers (Creative Mobile Technologies LLC) to add the rest of the yellow taxis, plus the new ‘green taxis’ coming out for Brooklyn and the other boroughs. And VeriFone tells us that it plans to roll out to the more than 70,000 taxis it powers worldwide.

Oh, you say that the app can’t hail your cab for you? VeriFone is planning to add the option to send a pickup request to every taxi in New York City with a single tap. We know that VeriFone is talking to such companies as Uber Technologies Inc. and Hailo Network USA Inc., which have begun providing e-hail service in the yellow cab industry in New York, to enable their apps to automatically pay for e-hailed rides in VeriFone taxis.”

Way2ride is available for iOS and Android smartphones.

“Way2ride makes every taxi ride better, whether you hail by hand or with an app,” says Amos Tamam, VeriFone’s senior vice president of taxi systems. “An app that provides this convenience in every taxi in New York City, including the new for-hire vehicles in upper Manhattan and the boroughs, will be a real benefit to passengers and drivers alike.”

August 19th, 2013

Gail Chiasson, North American Editor

The last we heard about the 5th Shanghai Digital Signage And Touch Technology Show was that it was asking people to pay to speak.

While we haven’t yet been told the name of any speakers (who may or may not have agreed to this), we are told that there will be professional seminars.

However, we have learned that the event, being held Sept. 4-6 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, will cover around 20,000 square meters and gather more than 300 suppliers.

Visitors will see how digital signage provides retailing solutions, advertising display solutions, and information display solutions.

In the Taiwan Pavilion, Taiwan-based companies have joined together, with leading brands including: Cayin Tech, Utechzone, Viatech, Quanmax Inc, Phistek Inc, and Star Media.

We notice that STRATACACHE is among those demonstrating multi-touch technology. And among those showing digital signage solutions are: Samsung, Panasonic, Intel, AMD, Colavia, NDS solutions, DT Research, SEEYOO, Chang Hong, RMG Networks, AOpen, Shuttle INC, Kingyoo electronics, GDS, Snice, Anovo tech, Kiosk life, and more.

Lexus Revs Up Ad Presence at Pearson Airport

August 18th, 2013

Dmitry Sokolov

With a high volume of educated, well earning passengers airports are a logical place to promote high-end products making the below Lexus install a shoe-in at Canada’s Toronto Pearson Airport.

Using a 16:9 video wall as a back-drop to the display allows to re-purpose many TV and classic media assets, adding to the versatility of the install.

The interactive stations, although somewhat large and imposing, match the design aesthetic of the car (with pedestals mimicking the front grille), fit well with the overall installation creative vision.
