Global, the Media and Entertainment group, has announced that DAX, its market leading digital audio advertising product, will be available to digital outdoor advertisers from February 2020. DAX will rebrand from the Digital Audio Exchange to the Digital Ad Exchange to better reflect that advertisers can buy both digital audio and digital outdoor together.

Global has announced their move into programmatic outdoor advertising with the introduction of digital outdoor through DAX. This latest move gives advertisers the ability to buy digital outdoor campaigns through demand side platforms (DSP), as they are able to do with other programmatic media such as audio and video.

Paula Oliver 1968 – 2019

January 14th, 2020

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

It is with great sadness that we write about the passing of Paula Oliver, Managing Director of Wildstone Consulting who left us on December 21, 2019 after a short illness.

Paula was a true DOOH pioneer, blazing the trail for airport screen advertising networks from the early 2000s onwards. Our industry really has lost one of its early founders.

Prior to joining Wildstone in 2014, she was for many years a JCDecaux Airport Board Director, defining and developing the UK airport advertising product across Heathrow and many other airports in the UK and Worldwide. After three years as Managing Director for Airport Partners, Paula formed her own very successful advertising consultancy Skybrands, which was subsequently acquired by Wildstone.

Paula was highly regarded by everyone she worked with. My personal memory was what fun she was to be around, she was kind, thoughtful, creative and energetic. She will be greatly missed by her clients, work colleagues and all who knew her. Our thoughts are with her family.

The funeral will be held on January 22, 2020. The family has asked that instead of flowers, donations can be made here.

#CES2020 @ProcterGamble’s #PGLifeLab

Americans will know that The Procter & Gamble Company is an American multinational consumer goods corporation headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, founded in 1837 by William Procter and James Gamble.

In Europe we know their brands but tend not to see that much about P&G itself but wow! how I was impressed why this corporate at #CES2020.

From their impressive Press Conference on one of the Media Days to their booth on the actual show floor, they demonstrated to me how a large corporate could innovate and poke fun at itself.

There are lots of lessons for other corporates wanting to innovate which can be learnt from these folks.

#CES2020 #NissanCES Intelligent Mobility

January 14th, 2020

Nissan’s ice cream van concept (first announced in June 2019) but shown last week at #CES2020 for the first time, is based on Nissan’s all-electric e-NV200 light commercial vehicle, which combines a zero-emission drivetrain, second-life battery storage and renewable solar energy generation for the home as well.

Combine that innovation with a well thought out, spacious stand with friendly staff and regular presentations using the big screen inside the booth made this our favourite stand in the automobiles area.

In order to get a free ice cream, all visitors needed to do (shown above) was take a phone of “whatever you like at the Nissan booth”, show your picture to a staff member and post said picture using the hashtag #NissanCES.

.. and this nice man below served you!

This was a perfect demonstration of Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility strategy, applying more than a decade of EV experience and progress in battery technology to create cleaner solutions for power on the go.

#CES2020 @TriNet #YourPeopleMatter

At the entrance to #CES2020‘s Eureka Park visitors were invited to “Post your looping video using the hashtag #YourPeopleMatter.

TriNet (TNET (NYSE)) is a cloud-based professional employer organisation for small and medium-sized businesses. TriNet administers payroll and health benefits and advises clients on employment law compliance and risk reduction, acting in some cases as an outsourced human resources department.

These sorts of selfie media walls have been done before of course but what we liked was that the LED displayed a mixture of hi-res stills plus the ‘looping video’ and the way that the props and camera was all setup to the side of the display.

The people manning the stand were super nice and friendly as well, which of course always helps.

#CES2020 @Delta Airlines PARALLEL REALITY Experience

January 14th, 2020

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

Thousands of people looking at the same display at the same time can EACH see their own entertainment, information, advertising, directions and / or translations, such is the claim from West Coast startup MisappliedSciences and at #CES2020 last week Delta Airlines easily had the best booth in the travel and tourism part of the LVCC actually demonstrating this technology in action.

Each ‘flyer’ was asked where they wanted to fly to and was then issued a boarding card.  I chose Tokyo. On entry to the ‘terminal’ building the sole screen displayed to me “Hello Adrian” and knew that I was flying to Japan. The other flyers looking at the same display saw their own personal information and the destination that they had chosen. This apparently works for up to 100 people at a time at the moment.

Other personalisation included language options (as shown above) but in reality many things could be shown as individual (advertisements in local language, specific gate information, late calls, wayfinding etc.).

Pixels on the display (shown below) can simultaneously project up to millions of light rays of different colours and brightness. Each ray can then be software-directed to a specific person.

A conventional pixel outputs only a single colour at any moment whereas a PARALLEL REALITY™ pixel can simultaneously output up to millions of controllable rays of different colours and brightness.

Delta are putting this technology into Detroit airport later this year as a pilot installation.  There’s still a lot of work for MisappliedSciences to do to better understand OOH but this really was an impressive demonstration.

#CES2020 #DEVegas2020 @PepcomEvents Eat, Drink, Demo

January 14th, 2020

Pepcom demo events are where the world’s most influential journalists meet the world’s most innovative companies.

Digital Experience! at CES is Pepcom’s annual media extravaganza, held the evening before the #CES2020 tradeshow opens.

Held at the Mirage hotel this year had a distinctly 60’s theme with tied-dyed shirts, VW Micro Buses and just over 170 companies demonstrating their innovation.

As always it was a blast and the event allowed us to meet a lot of new companies and spend quality time with those that interested us.

My #CES2020 Top 10

January 13th, 2020

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

I first went to CES back in 1995 when automative car parts, booth babes and the fledgling personal computer industry were very much the order of the day, in fact it would be 10 years before Samsung showed off a 102-inch plasma television in 2005!

This year #CES2020 started for us on Sunday January 5 and Monday January 6, 2020 as we were lucky enough to be able to attend the Media Days. We walked between 19,584 and 22,5647 steps each day Monday to Friday and managed to visit every exhibition venue (C-Space, LVCC, Sands Convention Centre and various rooms tucked away in the Encore, Flamingo, Venetian, Westgate and the Wynn).

Here’s our top 10 of what we saw. All lists such as this below are, of course, subjective but they are based primarily on our industry of AdTECH, AV, Digital Signage, DOOH etc. but my love of cars and music does also come through a little as you will see.

In order that I discovered them: –

  1. FPT Giorgio Moroder DJ Set, Preludio Launch and Press Conference
  2. Procter & Gamble’s #PGLifeLab
  3. Pepcom Showcase. Eat, Drink, Demo #DEVegas2020
  4. #AI Enabled BIC Shaver
  5. BMW i3 Urban Suite and Ride Hailing
  6. Verizon Media T-Shirt Giveaway
  7. Trinet #YourPeopleMatter
  8. Ultraleap 3D Gesture Touch
  9. #NissanCES Intelligent Mobility
  10. Delta Airlines PARALLEL REALITY Experience
