Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

Premium out-of-home media owner Ocean has been awarded long term agreements with City Property (Glasgow) Investments LLP, working in partnership with Glasgow City Council, to redevelop and introduce new roadside and city centre digital advertising screens.

This is Ocean’s second major council win of the year following its agreement with Southampton City Council which was announced in January.

Marc Keenan, MD Ocean Scotland told us “Ocean’s success in the Glasgow bid is key to our ongoing organic growth and development plan. Our digital cities for digital citizens proposition is about creating the very best platforms for advertisers and modern urban audiences. This best in class approach to DOOH will now be rolled out across Glasgow City Council’s existing portfolio and through our new responsive screens, further boosting the local economy and giving advertisers the chance to reach audiences in one of the fastest growing UK cities.”

The Glasgow contract, which is for selected premium locations, was awarded following a competitive tender. Ocean was successful in a significant number of the locations offered, further cementing the company’s position as a leading player in super-premium and roadside screens powered by new and emerging responsive technology.

Initially Ocean will redevelop a number of Glasgow’s iconic existing roadside locations, including what was previously known as the ‘Sail’, with enhanced screens and technologies. New opportunities in future phases will potentially result in the development of more than 20 locations, some of which will have more than one screen.

Glasgow is at the centre of Scotland’s largest urban economy and is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK following a number of high profile recent investments, many of which are in the financial services sector.

Float4 Creates Stunning Digital Content for NYC’s 28 Liberty

May 14th, 2019

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

When One Chase Manhattan Plaza, a landmark 60-story tower, was sold in 2013, the new owners renamed the property 28 Liberty and began a multi-million dollar renovation to change the former bank headquarters into a metropolitan centerpiece. The upgrades included 200,000 feet of retail space, a 350,000 square-foot food court and a 10-screen movie theatre, as well as a 34-foot by 25-foot LED lobby display and LED ribbons in the retail area that showcase eye-catching visuals. The latter two enhancements, powered by a customizable content management system developed on the ISAAC platform by Miami based Smart Monkeys, were designed and developed by renowned digital content creation studio, Float4.

Float4 Founder and Creative Director Alexandre Simionescu “The digital aesthetics at 28 Liberty reinvigorate the nearly 60-year old space. We produced an attraction in the building’s common areas, indirectly driving crowds and revenue to the owners and tenants. By combining data driven content, refined visuals and a turnkey technological solution, the building is equipped with a 24/7 platform that informs, entertains and engages building occupants and guests.”

The renovation decisions at the building were centered around its reinvention from a corporate entity to a modern hub. The multi-purpose displays and captivating digital content act as a tool for distributing information about the building itself, local events and internal announcements. Regarding its aesthetic allure, the ground floor lobby display attracts attention from people on the sidewalk. These additions, along with other upgrades, make 28 Liberty an attractive base for tenants and passersby alike.

“The content capsules were created for three very different displays that share different portions of the space: the main lobby screen, the retail display which is on the floor right beneath the lobby and finally the adjacent ceiling ribbons that provide elegant accents. One of my favorite capsules is data driven and displays visuals depicting lower Manhattan and weather conditions that are sourced in real-time. It’s a great way to convey information elegantly. Interstitials, which we use as transitions between content capsules, were also created to echo the property’s iconic art pieces such as the Dubuffet Sculpture and Isamu Noguchi’s Rock Garden.”

A pair of RealMotion servers are responsible for delivering the content, which interfaces with Smart Monkey’s ISAAC system to provide an extremely easy-to-use content management solution. Through this combination, the property managers can arrange daily schedules, add new content, and use templates to update content in real time.

Daktronics Integrates Control Solution With IPAWS

May 14th, 2019

Andrew Neale

Daktronics (NASDAQ-DAKT) announced this week the integration of its Venus Control Suite software to Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) emergency management alerts. Customers using Venus Control Suite to operate their digital billboards or outdoor displays can now automatically run IPAWS emergency alerts.

Jessie Koch, Daktronics product manager, points out the important role digital billboards can play in emergency management. “Our digital billboards are positive additions to the community. We are able to perform several public service functions by facilitating AMBER® Alerts, weather alerts and law enforcement alerts. Emergency alerts also help display owners build a positive relationship with the community. The Venus Control Suite and IPAWS interface streamlines the process of emergency management and offers a more comprehensive choice for our digital billboard owners,”.

Not just billboard owners, but schools, retailers and non-profits also donate space on their digital signs for public service announcements. Examples used include:

  • Clear Channel Outdoor displayed most-wanted information that helped the police catch 13 dangerous fugitives.
  • Schools use outdoor and indoor signage, including messages on video scoreboards, to alert parents and students when needed.
Walgreens drugstore sends out hundreds of AMBER Alerts and weather warnings at 1,200+ locations.
  • Service entities, such as fire departments, run content ranging from fire alerts and emergency evacuation plans to safety programs and smoke alarm reminders.

Federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial alerting authorities use IPAWS and integrate local systems that use Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) standards with the IPAWS infrastructure. IPAWS provides public safety officials with an effective way to alert and warn the public about serious emergencies using the Emergency Alert System (EAS), Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio, and other public alerting systems from a single interface.
